A taxonomic genus within the family Gesneriaceae – various flowering plants. Hypernyms. An inventory of Gesneriaceae in Sumatra based on herbarium specimens and field trips resulted in 17 genera. The genus Cyrtandra was the most diverse genus, followed by Aeschynanthus. Here we enumerate the species of Aeschynanthus in Sumatra. Distribution and altitudinal notes on 17 species of Aeschynanthus were made and the late Mary Mendum of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh added .

The objective of this study was to build on a previously published molecular phylogenetic hypothesis for Cyrtandra to identify major clades of the genus in the Solomon Islands.         The British botanist Anna Atkins published the first book of photographs in and titled it Photographs of British The photographs appeared to be of sufficient detail to allow a sound identification if more was known about the genus. An example was the genus Cyrtandra, which is characterized by a large number of species that are.   Cyrtandra are generally found in moist and wet forest areas on the islands. They range from herbs to small trees. Usually they have a soft fuzzy surface on the leaves. In the Manual of the Flowering Plants of Hawaii, by Herbst, Wagner, and Sohmer (University of Hawaii Press, ) the authors describe and name 53 species in the Cyrtandra genus.

As part of ongoing molecular phylogenetic work on the large Gesneriaceae genus Cyrtandra, new insights into the taxonomy and relationships of the Cyrtandra of Japan, Taiwan and Batan Island in the northern Philippines have emerged.

Centers of diversity for the group include Borneo (ca. spp.), the Philippines (ca. spp.), and New Guinea (ca. spp.). A spectacular new species from the African violet family, Cyrtandra vittata, was discovered in northern New Guinea.
